I’ve been losing some poundage lately, while continuing to avoid the gym.

This works. You can eat less and lose weight without the gym. But without some kind of physical activity (and there are LOTS of options for this), you’re still not going to be as healthy as you should be. I know Lauren lives in a big city and probably walks a LOT. People who drive everywhere and have sedentary jobs don’t have the advantage of forced exercise just to get where they’re going. Without physical activity, you have to restrict your food intake to a point that would be extremely unpleasant (at least, for a girl who loves food as much as I do).
Trust me, the gym is not always my favorite place to be, but when it comes down to it, I love the feeling I get after I go… being able to lift a little more weight, run a little bit farther, feel stronger in general. There’s nothing like a really good workout to boost my self-esteem. But I encourage you to do what works for you. If you hate working out by yourself in a gym, join a dance class or swim class. If you hate exercising in public, get yourself a lot of fun workout DVDs and equipment you can use at home (exercise balls, free weights, etc.). Bike to and from work. Run outside. WHATEVER works for you. Just do it.
